SPELEON, the Center of Subterranean Heritage, is a must-see attraction located in Rakovica, Croatia, near the famous Barać Caves. This modern visitor center provides an immersive experience into the world of cave systems and the rich natural heritage they hold. The center's exhibits focus on four key themes: speleology, geology, archeology, and paleontology. Visitors can explore the geological formations of the caves, learn about the Ice Age and the animals that inhabited the region tens of thousands of years ago, and discover archaeological finds from the area. The center uses a variety of modern, multimedia exhibits, including models, LCD screens, smart glasses, replicas, animations, and interactive touch screens, to bring the stories of the subterranean world to life. A highlight is the atrium featuring hyperrealistic replicas of extinct animals like cave lions, woolly rhinoceroses, and hyenas. SPELEON is designed to be accessible and engaging for all ages, with a children's playroom inspired by speleology and the Ice Age. The center also offers free parking, a cafe, and a souvenir shop. Knowledgeable guides lead tours, included in the ticket price, that last approximately 45 minutes to an hour. SPELEON is open year-round, except for December 25-26 and January 1.
