Discover more about Spomenik Sv. Petra

The Spomenik Sv. Petra stands as a proud landmark on the peninsula of the same name, guarding the Makarska harbor. This impressive statue, created by sculptor Tomislav Kršnjavi, is 3.6 meters tall and weighs 900 kilograms. Since its unveiling on April 13, 2009, it has attracted visitors with its artistic value and cultural significance. Saint Peter holds the keys to paradise, symbolizing the power given to him by Jesus. His gaze watches over the harbor, protecting its inhabitants. The statue is a testament to faith and resilience for the local community. The peninsula itself reveals traces of prehistoric settlements, as well as late antique and Venetian architecture. The original church was built in the 6th century, but it was rebuilt and upgraded over time. It acquired a Gothic appearance in the 15th century and a Baroque style in the 18th century. Unfortunately, it was severely damaged in the 1962 earthquake, and its remains were removed the following year. The church was reconstructed to reflect its 18th-century appearance, preserving its historical and artistic value. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls around the area, soaking in the serene atmosphere and panoramic views. The combination of the statue and the scenic views creates a picturesque scene.
