Discover more about Sveta Marija

Sveta Marija Island, a jewel within Mljet National Park, is a captivating islet in the Veliko Jezero (Great Lake). Its main draw is the Benedictine monastery, dating back to the 12th century. The island's history stretches back to 1198 when Pope Innocent III consecrated the Church of Saint Mary. In 1151, Neretvyan Prince Desa granted the islet to Benedictine monks, who then constructed the monastery. Over the centuries, the monastery has seen numerous architectural changes, blending Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The complex includes a large church, small chapels, and monks' quarters, which now house a restaurant. The island also features ruins of a Roman building and stables. The monks deepened the passage between the Great and Small Lakes and built a tidal mill. After 1809, when Napoleon's forces closed the monastery, the island had various owners and uses, including a hotel from 1960 to 1991. In 1998, the Diocese of Dubrovnik regained ownership and began restoration. Today, Sveta Marija Island is a peaceful retreat where visitors can explore the historic monastery, enjoy the views, and even swim in the clear waters. The island is accessible by a short boat ride from Mali Most and Pristanište, included in the Mljet National Park entrance fee.
