Discover more about Jelengrad

Jelengrad Castle, situated on the southwestern slopes of Moslavačka gora, stands as one of the best-preserved medieval castles in northwestern Croatia. Constructed around the turn of the 15th century, Jelengrad served as a prominent center for the Čupor Moslavački family and later the Erdödy family. The castle's strategic location on an elongated plateau, significantly raised from the surrounding moat, highlights its defensive design. Historical records first mention Jelengrad in 1444, though it is believed to have been built earlier. The castle was abandoned between 1540 and 1545 due to increasing Ottoman attacks in Moslavina. Despite its good condition, Jelengrad remained largely outside scientific interest for many years. Since 2012, archaeological research and conservation efforts have been underway, revealing insights into the castle's historical development and the daily life of its inhabitants during the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, surrounded by lush greenery and scenic landscapes, offering a unique blend of historical exploration and natural beauty. The outer defensive walls, built to conform to the terrain, form an irregular, elongated rectangle. The entrance, guarded by a rectangular tower on the east side, provides a tangible connection to the castle's past. Although the original access route is debated, a steep path from the east and a hiking trail from the north offer access to the castle.
