Getting There

  • Car

    The main entrance to Nature Park Papuk is located in Velika. From Zagreb, take the E70 highway towards Slavonski Brod, then exit at Nova Gradiška. Follow Route 51 north towards Požega, then turn left onto Route 4253 towards Velika. The drive from Zagreb to Velika is approximately 2.5 hours. Parking is available near the park entrance in Velika. Parking costs approximately 10 HRK per day.

  • Public Transport

    From Zagreb, take a bus to Požega. From Požega, local buses run to Velika, the main entrance to Papuk Nature Park. Check the local bus schedules for accurate timings, as services may be limited. A one-way bus ticket from Požega to Velika costs approximately 20 HRK.

Nature Park Papuk, located in the Slavonia region of eastern Croatia, is a captivating blend of geological wonder, lush landscapes, and historical significance. Rising majestically from the surrounding plains, Papuk Mountain, the park's centerpiece, was proclaimed a Nature Park in 1999 and a Geopark in 2007. It encompasses an area of 336 sq km and includes parts of Papuk and Krndija mountains.Papuk's geological history stretches back over 540 million years, with rock formations telling tales of the ancient Pannonian Sea and the dynamic forces that shaped the region. As Croatia's first geopark, Papuk showcases diverse rock types, including igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. The Rupnica site, a geological monument since 1948, features columnar jointing in volcanic rocks, a unique phenomenon.The park's diverse ecosystems support a rich array of flora and fauna. Forests, predominantly beech and oak, cover over 96% of the park, providing habitats for red deer, roe deer, wild boar, and various bird species. The park's streams and springs are home to brown trout and crayfish, while the Uviraljka abyss serves as a wintering ground for numerous bat species.Papuk also boasts a rich cultural heritage, with archaeological sites dating back to the Neolithic period. Medieval fortresses, including the Ružica Old Town, dot the landscape, testaments to the region's historical importance. The park offers various activities, including hiking, cycling, rock climbing, and paragliding. Popular destinations include the Jankovac Park Forest, with its Skakavac waterfall, lakes and caves, and the Duboka campground.
