Discover more about Sea Organ

Located on Zadar's Riva, the Sea Organ (Morske Orgulje) is a captivating blend of architecture and nature. Created by architect Nikola Bašić and opened to the public in 2005, this unique installation transformed a once-damaged coastline into a mesmerizing soundscape. The Sea Organ is designed to reconnect locals and visitors with the Adriatic Sea.The organ stretches seventy meters along the Zadar waterfront and consists of a series of marble steps that descend into the sea. Beneath these steps lies a network of 35 pipes of varying lengths, diameters, and slopes. As waves enter these pipes, they create air pressure that produces a series of random yet harmonic sounds. The sounds are then emitted through openings in the stone steps, creating a soothing and unique auditory experience. The unpredictable nature of the sea ensures that the Sea Organ offers a never-ending concert of musical variations, with nature itself as the performer. The Sea Organ is more than just a musical instrument; it's a place for relaxation, contemplation, and connection. Visitors gather on the marble steps to listen to the sounds of the sea, enjoy the beautiful views of the Dalmatian coast, and witness the stunning Zadar sunsets. The Sea Organ is located near another modern installation, the Greeting to the Sun, which creates a spectacular light show powered by solar energy, making the waterfront a vibrant and captivating space. The creation of the Sea Organ was part of a larger project to revitalize Zadar's Riva, which had been damaged during World War II. The reconstruction left the shoreline with an uninspiring concrete wall, and Bašić's design aimed to create a new public space that would reconnect the city with its maritime heritage. The Sea Organ has since become a symbol of Zadar, attracting tourists and locals alike.
