The Zadar City Walls, known locally as 'Muraj,' are more than just a historical landmark; they are a symbol of Zadar's resilience and strategic importance throughout the centuries. Constructed initially in the 12th and 13th centuries, the walls were significantly strengthened in the 16th century by the Venetian Republic to defend against Ottoman invasions. These fortifications are a key part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, 'Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries'.Walking along the walls, visitors can appreciate the blend of architectural styles and the stories they tell. The Land Gate (Kopnena vrata), built in 1543, stands as a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, adorned with the image of Saint Krševan and the Lion of Saint Mark. The Sea Gate (Morska vrata), constructed in 1573, commemorates the Christian victory over the Ottoman Empire at Lepanto. The walls have witnessed numerous conflicts and sieges, serving as a refuge for the city's inhabitants. The name 'Walls of Zadar's Uprisings' (Bedemi zadarskih pobuna) reflects the eleven rebellions Zadar citizens staged against Venetian rule. Although parts of the walls were damaged in the 19th and 20th centuries, significant restoration efforts, including a major project completed in 2020, have preserved their historical integrity and made them accessible to tourists. Today, the Zadar City Walls provide a unique opportunity to experience history while enjoying panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the city.
