    Discover more about Fort Beekenburg

Fort Beekenburg, also known as Het Kasteel, is a historical fort located on the peninsula of Caracas Bay in Curaçao. Built in 1703 by the Dutch, under the direction of Governor Nicolaas van Beek, the fort was strategically positioned to defend the Spanish Water, one of the few easily accessible landing points on the island. Its construction was crucial in preventing enemies from reaching Willemstad. The fort's architecture is notable for its round tower, constructed from stones brought from the Netherlands as ballast. These stones were exchanged for goods upon arrival in Curaçao. Throughout the 18th century, Fort Beekenburg successfully repelled attacks by the English, French, and pirates. Although the English occupied Curaçao twice, they never managed to capture the fort.Between 1927 and 2005, the area surrounding the fort was owned and operated by Shell, making it inaccessible to the public. In 2005, the area was sold to the Antillean government, and the fort was reopened for visitors. Today, Fort Beekenburg stands as a testament to Curaçao's rich history and offers stunning views of the coastline. Visitors can explore the fort's exterior, walk along its walls, and admire the cannons. Inside, a small museum displays exhibits about the fort's history and the island's military heritage.
