Desenkadená, meaning "Unchained," is a powerful monument located in Otrobanda, Willemstad, Curaçao, serving as a poignant reminder of the island's history of slavery and the enduring fight for freedom. Also known as the Tula Monument, it commemorates the Curaçao Slave Revolt of 1795, a pivotal event in the island's struggle for emancipation. The monument, created by Curaçaoan sculptor Nel Simon, depicts three figures – two men and a woman – in the act of breaking free from their chains. The central figure, often identified as Tula, the leader of the revolt, wields a hammer and chisel, symbolizing the act of liberation. The figures are muscular and semi-nude, their expressions conveying strength, determination, and hope. The monument's design focuses on the solutions to oppression, highlighting strength and collaboration rather than struggle and pain. The Curaçao Slave Revolt of 1795 was led by Tula and other rebel leaders, who sought justice, equality, brotherhood, and liberty for all. Tula, inspired by the Haitian Revolution and the ideals of the French Revolution, argued that the enslaved people of Curaçao deserved their freedom. The revolt, which began on August 17, 1795, involved hundreds of slaves and lasted for over a month. Despite their efforts, the revolt was ultimately suppressed by the Dutch colonial government. Tula was captured and brutally tortured to death on October 3, 1795, on the very spot where the monument now stands. Other rebel leaders, including Bazjan Karpata, Louis Mercier, and Pedro Wakao, were also executed.
