Nestled within the historic Fort Amsterdam, the Fort Church, also known as Fortkerk, is a significant landmark in Willemstad, Curaçao. Constructed between 1767 and 1769, it is the oldest church still in daily use on the island, bearing the date 1769 on its facade. The church's construction cost around 5,500 pesos, but the architect remains unknown.Originally built as a garrison church, the Fort Church has witnessed Curaçao's rich history. In 1804, during the British conquest, a cannonball struck the church's outer wall and remains embedded as a reminder of the event. In 1824, the Lutheran Church and Dutch Reformed Church merged into the United Protestant Community of Curaçao and began sharing the Fort Church. The church's tower was renovated in 1903, replacing the original wooden structure with a stone one. The Fort Church was restored in 1991 and granted monument status in 1995. In 1997, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the historical center of Willemstad.The church's architecture features sturdy walls, tall arched windows, and a central staircase. Inside, four towering columns support a striking blue wooden vault. The mahogany pulpit and governor's bench, crafted in the 18th century by Pieter de Mey, add to the church's exquisite craftsmanship. The Fort Church Museum, located in the basement, displays artifacts and treasures from the Protestant community's history in Curaçao. Among its exhibits are old Bibles, wall maps, prints, a pastor's robe, and an ancient clock. The museum also houses the original clockwork from 1788, a gift from Captain Dirk van der Meer.Today, the Fort Church remains an active place of worship and a cultural treasure. Visitors can explore its historical significance, admire its architecture, and experience the warmth of its congregation. The church is open to the public with a small admission fee that supports the maintenance of this iconic structure.
