Discover more about Fort Beekenburg

Fort Beekenburg, a historical landmark in Curaçao, is located on the peninsula of Caracasbaai. Constructed in 1703 by the Dutch, under the direction of Governor Nicolaas van Beek, the fort was strategically positioned to defend the Spanish Water, a vital inland bay, from pirates and invading forces. The fort is named after Governor Nicolaas van Beek. The fort's round tower, resembling a chess piece, was constructed using stones brought from the Netherlands as ballast. These stones were then exchanged for goods once they arrived in Curaçao. Throughout the 18th century, Fort Beekenburg successfully repelled attacks by the English, French, and pirates. Although the English occupied Curaçao twice, they were unable to capture the fort.In 1927, the area surrounding Fort Beekenburg became an oil terminal operated by Shell, making the fort inaccessible to the public until 2005. Today, the fort is open to the public and offers stunning views of Caracas Bay and the Spanish Water. Visitors can explore the tower, the remnants of a water reservoir, wall remnants of a cottage, and a platform with battlements where cannons once stood.
