Discover more about Netto Bar

Netto Bar, a Curaçaoan institution, has been serving locals and visitors since 1954. Founded by Ernesto “Netto” Koster, affectionately known as 'Chikí,' the bar is nestled on Breedestraat in Otrobanda, a historic district of Willemstad. More than just a place to grab a drink, Netto Bar is a cultural landmark, a living testament to Curaçao's vibrant history and social fabric. Otrobanda, meaning 'the other side' in Papiamentu, is located west of the Queen Emma Bridge and has long been known as the working-class heart of the city. While it may not have the polished look of Punda, its colorful houses, narrow roads, and vibrant street art give it an authentic charm. Netto Bar embodies this authentic charm, offering a glimpse into the real Curaçao, away from the tourist crowds. What sets Netto Bar apart is its famous 'Ròm Bèrdè' (Green Rum), a potent and uniquely flavored spirit that is exclusively available here. The recipe is a closely guarded secret, passed down through generations of the Koster family. Made with a blend of local herbs and spices, the Green Rum is a staple libation among Curaçaoan men and a must-try for adventurous visitors. It's typically served in a small glass, often with a glass of water or coconut water on the side. The bar itself is a quirky and unpretentious space, reflecting the personality of its founder and the spirit of the island. The walls are adorned with a hodgepodge of soccer memorabilia, flags, banners, license plates, and photographs, creating a unique and eclectic atmosphere. It's a place where locals gather to share stories, watch soccer games, and enjoy each other's company. Netto Bar has played a significant role in Curaçao's carnival celebrations for decades. Its prime location on Breedestraat offers visitors a perfect vantage point to enjoy the vibrant parades that pass through the city. The bar has established itself over the years as a meeting place for people from all walks of life, where they can immerse themselves in Curaçao's culture, traditions, and, of course, the legendary Ròm Bèrde. Ernesto “Netto” Koster, the bar's founder, was a beloved figure in Otrobanda. He was known for his warm hospitality, his passion for soccer, and his dedication to his community. He ran the bar until his health started deteriorating at 87. He continued to visit his beloved bar after retirement, warmly greeting patrons, making sure his soccer memorabilia was hanging in the right spots, checking if the bar was sufficiently stocked with Ròm Bèrdè until he passed away in 2002. After Netto passed in 2004, his protégé, Jesus “Chu” Zimmerman, took over. Chu keeps Ròm Bèrdè flowing, preferring to drink it on the rocks mixed with coconut water. The bar's décor remains simple and the vibe continues to be laid-back. Locals crowd the place late into the evenings on Fridays, and occasionally there's live music. Visiting Netto Bar is more than just having a drink; it's an experience. It's a chance to connect with the local culture, to meet interesting people, and to taste a unique piece of Curaçaoan history. It's a place where you can feel the pulse of the island and understand what makes it so special. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, make sure to include Netto Bar on your list of must-see attractions in Curaçao. It's a place that will stay with you long after you've left, a reminder of the warmth, the vibrancy, and the unique spirit of this Caribbean island. Netto Bar celebrated its 70th anniversary in December 2024 with a vibrant lineup of music and cultural events, a testament to its enduring legacy and its continued importance to the Curaçaoan community. The festivities included performances by DJ Leannon and Grupo Komper, culminating with a grand finale by Kurashi Soundsystem, according to owners Danny and Ray Maarten. In addition to its iconic Ròm Bèrde (Green Rum), the "Netto Colada" has become a customer favorite. The atmosphere here is one-of-a-kind, blending local charm with an international vibe. This makes the bar a hotspot for anyone looking to enjoy a great night out, with fantastic music, warm company, and famous drinks.
