Landhuis Groot Sint Joris: A Glimpse into Curaçao's Colonial Past

Landhuis Groot Sint Joris stands as a significant symbol of Curaçao's colonial history. Originally constructed in the 18th century, possibly as early as 1753, the estate was once a plantation house. The current structure likely dates back to the second half of the 19th century, though it incorporates an 18th-century facade.The landhuis is a large complex with a main structure and additional buildings. The main building is a one-story structure with a rectangular floor plan divided into three sections, a layout typical of Curaçaoan country estates. These sections are covered by three parallel hipped roofs. The front facade features a core section closed with an almost semicircular gable. Inside, the 'sala' or living room connects all other rooms, allowing breezes to flow through the house.While the landhuis is privately owned and the interior is not always accessible, the grounds are often open for exploration. Visitors can wander through the lush gardens and appreciate the serene atmosphere. The building's charming design, complete with vibrant colors and intricate details, makes it a perfect backdrop for photography. The estate sometimes hosts local events and cultural activities, providing an opportunity to experience Curaçaoan traditions.Historically, the plantation was quite large, measuring 454 hectares in 1696. In the early 20th century, the owner used American windmills to pump groundwater for nearly 1,000 coconut palms and 6,000 fruit trees. The landhuis also served as a place for enslaved people to recover after their journey to the island.
