Discover more about Fort Nassau

Fort Nassau, officially known as Fort Oranje Nassau, stands on a 68-meter-high hill, offering a commanding view of Willemstad and its harbor. Constructed in 1796, it was initially named Fort Republiek by the Dutch. The fort's strategic location made it a key defensive point, attracting the attention of invading navies. In 1807, the British captured Curaçao and renamed the fort Fort George. However, in 1816, the island was returned to the Netherlands, and the fort was renamed Fort Orange Nassau. Although it lost its military function in 1825, it served as a control tower for the Queen Emma Bridge. Since 1959, Fort Nassau has been home to a restaurant, blending history with gastronomy. Visitors can explore the fort's original cannons, the former prison, and other historical remnants. The restaurant offers casual fine dining with international cuisine and Caribbean twists, providing a memorable experience with breathtaking views, especially at sunset. The Monument Foundation of Curacao declared Fort Nassau a National Monument in 1959.
