Discover more about Playa Grandi

Playa Grandi, also called Playa Piskadó, is a unique and captivating beach located in the small village of Sabana Westpunt on the western coast of Curaçao. This isn't your typical pristine Caribbean beach with powdery white sand; instead, it's a small, somewhat rocky cove that offers an authentic glimpse into the local fishing culture and an unparalleled opportunity to swim with sea turtles in their natural environment. What sets Playa Grandi apart is its thriving marine life, particularly the abundance of sea turtles. These gentle creatures are drawn to the area by the local fishermen who clean their daily catch on the nearby pier, discarding fish scraps into the water. This practice has inadvertently created a haven for turtles, making Playa Grandi one of the best places in Curaçao to observe them up close while snorkeling. While the beach itself may not be the main attraction, the snorkeling experience is truly exceptional. As you enter the crystal-clear waters, you'll be immediately greeted by a variety of colorful fish and, of course, the majestic sea turtles. With a bit of luck, you might even spot different turtle species, including green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, and loggerhead turtles. The turtles are accustomed to human presence, allowing for incredible close encounters as they gracefully glide through the water. Beyond the turtles, Playa Grandi offers a glimpse into the daily lives of local fishermen. You can watch them casting their nets from the quay or cleaning their freshly caught fish on the beach, adding a lively and authentic atmosphere to the area. This interaction with the local community provides a unique cultural experience that goes beyond the typical tourist attractions. Despite its popularity, Playa Grandi maintains a relaxed and laid-back vibe. It's a place where you can escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Curaçao. Whether you're an avid snorkeler, a nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a unique cultural experience, Playa Grandi has something to offer everyone. While Playa Grandi provides a unique experience, it's worth noting some practical considerations. The beach is relatively small and can get crowded, especially during peak season. Parking is limited, so arriving early is highly recommended. The beach itself is not as well-maintained as some of the more tourist-oriented beaches on the island, and the entrance to the water can be rocky, so water shoes are advisable. Despite these minor drawbacks, the opportunity to swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat makes Playa Grandi a truly unforgettable experience. It's a place where you can connect with nature, immerse yourself in local culture, and create lasting memories of your Curaçao adventure. To make the most of your visit, consider bringing your own snorkeling gear, as rentals may be limited. Also, be sure to pack sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water to stay hydrated in the Caribbean sun. And don't forget your camera to capture the incredible underwater moments with the sea turtles. Playa Grandi is more than just a beach; it's an experience that will stay with you long after you leave Curaçao. It's a place where you can witness the beauty of nature, connect with local culture, and create memories that will last a lifetime. So, pack your bags, grab your snorkel gear, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure at Playa Grandi, Curaçao's turtle paradise. While in Sabana Westpunt, consider exploring other nearby attractions, such as Grote Knip and Kleine Knip, two of Curaçao's most beautiful beaches. You can also visit Shete Boka National Park, where you can witness the power of the ocean as it crashes against the rugged coastline. And for those interested in hiking, Christoffel National Park offers stunning views and diverse flora and fauna.
