Discover more about Avakas Gorge Canyon

Avakas Gorge, located within the Akamas Peninsula near Paphos, is a breathtaking testament to the power of nature. Over countless millennia, the Avgas River has sculpted this dramatic gorge, carving a deep ravine through the soft limestone bedrock. The result is a stunning canyon characterized by towering cliffs reaching up to 30 meters, unique geological formations, and a rich tapestry of plant and animal life. The gorge's geology tells a fascinating story etched in stone. The cliffs, composed of chalks, marls, and reef limestone, reveal layers of Earth's history dating back millions of years. In some places, massive boulders are precariously wedged between the cliffs, creating natural tunnels and bridges. The Avakas Gorge is a haven for biodiversity. Its unique microclimate supports various plant species, including wild fig trees, oleanders, ferns, and the rare Akamas centaury, a plant found nowhere else on Earth. Keep an eye out for foxes, hares, and various bird species, including the endemic Cyprus wheatear and Cyprus warbler. Local folklore suggests that fairies and spirits once inhabited the gorge, and on quiet evenings, the wind carries whispers of these ancient inhabitants through the narrow canyon walls. The Avakas Gorge Nature Trail stretches approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) one way. While the trail is relatively short, it varies in difficulty. The first part of the hike is quite accessible, with a well-trodden path that winds through the open countryside. However, as you enter the gorge, the terrain becomes more challenging, with rocky paths, narrow passages, and some scrambling required over giant boulders. Waterproof hiking shoes are essential. The best time to explore the Avakas Gorge is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild and the flora is in full bloom. Summer can be extremely hot, while winter might make the trail slippery and dangerous. It is not recommended to visit after heavy rain due to the risk of flooding.
