Discover more about Paphos Castle

Paphos Castle stands proudly at the western end of Paphos Harbour, bearing witness to the city's rich and often turbulent history. Originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbor, it has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped Cyprus. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1222, the castle was rebuilt and expanded by the Lusignans during the Frankish era. It became a key Crusader castle, featuring two towers connected by a defensive wall. The Venetians, fearing an Ottoman invasion, dismantled one of the towers in the 15th century. The castle that stands today is largely the result of the Ottoman reconstruction in 1592. The Ottomans used the lower floors as a prison and installed cannons on the roof for defense. When the British took control in 1878, the castle was used as a salt store until 1935, when it was declared an Ancient Monument. Today, Paphos Castle is a popular tourist attraction that hosts various events and art exhibitions. Visitors can explore the central courtyard, the prison cells and climb to the rooftop battlements for stunning views of the harbor and the city.
