Discover more about Ayia Napa Aqueduct

The Ayia Napa Aqueduct, a historical landmark in Cyprus, offers a glimpse into the island's past. Originally constructed during the Roman period, with subsequent modifications during the Frankish era, this aqueduct was crucial for providing water to the Ayia Napa Monastery and the adjacent regions. It stands as one of the few remaining aqueducts on the island. Located between Cape Pyla and Cape Cavo Greco, the aqueduct demonstrates the sophisticated engineering knowledge of the time. The structure required constant maintenance to prevent leaks and clear debris. Water flowed through a subterranean channel, sourced from a spring northwest of Ormidia, eventually reaching a reservoir near the monastery. This reservoir, situated beneath a sycamore tree in the monastery courtyard, facilitated irrigation of the surrounding fields. Today, visitors can explore the remains of this ancient water system. Although some reviews mention neglect and overgrowth, the site offers an intriguing walk with scenic views. Informative plaques provide context about the aqueduct's history and its role in water management. The surrounding area provides a peaceful escape from the bustling tourist spots of Ayia Napa.
