Paphos Forest, a sprawling natural wonderland in Cyprus, beckons travelers with its promise of serene landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and a rich tapestry of history and culture. Covering approximately 700 square kilometers, the forest dominates the northwestern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, offering a refreshing contrast to the island's sun-kissed coastlines. Designated a Permanent Game Reserve since 1938, Paphos Forest is a haven for biodiversity. The forest is home to over 600 plant species, including the endemic Cyprus cedar (Cedrus brevifolia), which thrives in the picturesque Cedar Valley. Towering Brutia pine and golden oak trees create a verdant canopy, providing shelter for a variety of wildlife. Keep an eye out for the elusive Cyprus mouflon (Ovis gmelini ophion), a type of wild sheep and the island's largest endemic mammal, as well as red foxes, Cyprus mice, and a variety of reptiles and amphibians. The forest is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with numerous avian species inhabiting the area, including Bonelli's eagle, the Cyprus warbler, and the Cyprus scops owl. The Paphos Forest has been declared a Special Protection Area (SPA) according to the Birds Directive (79/409/ΕΕC), due to its high value for avifauna. Beyond its natural beauty, Paphos Forest is steeped in history and cultural significance. Scattered throughout the forest are ancient ruins, old churches and chapels, Venetian bridges, and old forest stations, offering glimpses into the island's past. The Kykkos Monastery, one of the wealthiest and most influential monasteries in Cyprus, lies within the forest's boundaries, attracting pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike. For outdoor enthusiasts, Paphos Forest offers a plethora of activities. A network of well-maintained hiking trails caters to all skill levels, from leisurely strolls to challenging climbs. Popular trails include the Adonis Nature Trail, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, and the Smigies Nature Trail, with options for both short and long routes through the Akamas Forest.
