Getting There

  • Walking

From the historic centre near the Lala Mustafa Pasha mosque, a pleasant 5–10 minute walk takes you through Famagusta’s old quarter toward the harbour wall. The castle towers rise ahead, visible from the city’s central square, guiding you in. Expect uneven paving and pedestrian traffic; the final approach is on foot only.

  • Taxi

A brief taxi ride from the central bus station or modern city centre deposits you near the old city walls in a few minutes, typically costing about 6–10 euros. From there it’s a short walk along old‑town lanes to the castle entrance. Parking is limited within the old quarter, and small fees apply at nearby municipal lots.

Discover more about Othello Castle

Set within the walled old town of Famagusta, Othello Castle stands as a striking relic of Cyprus’s layered past. Constructed in the 14th century by the Lusignans to protect the harbour, this impenetrable citadel boasted deep moats and square towers guarding the water’s edge. The arrival of Venetian rule in the late 15th century ushered in dramatic transformation: the square towers were replaced with circular bastions to resist cannon fire, the upper floor removed to integrate the building into the fortifications, and above the entrance was carved the Lion of St. Mark with the name of Captain Nicolo Foscari and the date 1492. A famed restoration took place in 2014–15, reopening the castle in 2015.Visitors entering the central courtyard encounter centuries‑old cannons, iron cannonballs and enormous stone projectiles—silent witnesses to the city’s sieges. To one side, rib‑vaulted dormitories and a refectory dating to 1300 – 1310 offer a glimpse of the Lusignan lifestyle, while the Great Hall, once the dining chamber, still rises with its vaulted ceiling and tapestry pegs. Climb to the battlements and you are rewarded with sweeping views of both ancient and modern harbours. Legends also linger beneath your feet—rumoured hidden Venetian treasuries lie buried in the depths of its tunnels. Othello Castle is not only an architectural gem but a dramatic setting where history, legend and literature converge.
