Discover more about Archaeological Site of Amathous

The Archaeological Site of Amathous, located near Agios Tychon, 11 km east of Limassol, invites visitors to step back in time and uncover the secrets of a civilization that flourished for centuries. Founded around 1100 BC, Amathous was one of the most important ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus. According to mythology, King Kinyras founded the city, and it was here that Theseus left the pregnant Ariadne to be cared for after his battle with the Minotaur. The city was also an important center for the worship of the Goddess Aphrodite-Astarte. As you wander through the extensive ruins, you'll encounter the remains of the Agora, once the heart of commercial and political life. Explore the public baths, the Temple of Aphrodite, early Christian basilicas, and several tombs, each telling a story of Amathous's vibrant past. The Romans, Persians, Ptolemies, and Byzantines all left their mark on Amathous before its decline in the 7th century AD following Arab invasions. Highlights of the site include the Temple of Aphrodite, situated atop a hill on the Acropolis, and the large stone-paved court of the Agora, which was organized during the Roman period. The site also features a replica of a massive limestone amphora dating back to the 6th century BC; the original is in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and allow at least two hours to fully explore the site. The site is partially wheelchair accessible.
