Discover more about Aphendrika

Aphendrika, located near Dipkarpaz on the Karpas Peninsula, is more than just a historical site; it's a portal to Cyprus's diverse past. Once identified as the ancient city of Ourania, mentioned by ancient writers, the area showcases ruins dating back to the Hellenistic period. Conquered by Demetrius Poliorcetes during the conflicts following Alexander the Great's reign, Ourania's archaeological evidence suggests the city thrived between the 6th and 2nd centuries BC.Today, visitors can explore the remains of three Byzantine churches: Panagia Aphendrika (Chrysiotissa), Asomatos, and Agios Georgios. These churches, though partially ruined, stand as testaments to the area's prosperity from the 6th to 12th centuries. Panagia Aphendrika, a 16th-century chapel, was built within the nave of an earlier basilica. The church of Asomatos lies a short distance south of Panagia Aphendrika, while the ruinous Agios Georgios, possibly the earliest surviving domed building on Cyprus, features unique architectural elements. While exploring Aphendrika, one can also imagine the ancient harbor that once facilitated trade and connection. Though largely silted up, it serves as a reminder of the city's maritime past. The surrounding landscape of Dipkarpaz adds to the allure, offering stunning views and a sense of peaceful discovery. Keep an eye out for local shepherds and their flocks, as the churches are sometimes used as sheep pens.
