    Paphos Castle is located at the western end of Paphos harbor, making it easily accessible on foot from most locations in Kato Paphos. From the Kato Paphos Main Bus Station, walk along the Coastal Broadwalk for approximately 5 minutes to reach the castle. The castle will be directly in front of you.

  • Public Transport

    To reach Paphos Castle via public transport, take any bus heading to the 'Paphos Harbour Station' or 'Kato Paphos Main Bus Station'. Bus routes 610, 611, 615, and 631 stop near the castle. From the bus station, it's a short, approximately 5-minute walk to the castle along the Coastal Broadwalk. A single bus fare costs €2. Daily bus passes are available for €6.50, offering better value if you plan to visit multiple sites in one day.

  • Driving

    If driving, head towards Kato Paphos and follow signs for 'Paphos Harbour'. As you approach the harbor, signs will direct you to Paphos Castle. Ample free parking is available near the harbor, but it can get crowded during peak season. Arrive early to secure a parking spot. From the parking area, walk towards the Coastal Broadwalk, and the castle will be directly in front of you.

Paphos Castle, majestically situated at the western end of Paphos Harbour, is a powerful reminder of Cyprus's layered history. Originally built as a Byzantine fortress to protect the harbor, the castle has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the various powers that have controlled the island.The initial Byzantine fort was destroyed by an earthquake in 1222. The Lusignans rebuilt and expanded it in the 13th century, and the Genoese invasion in 1373 further highlighted its strategic importance. The Venetians, fearing an Ottoman invasion, dismantled parts of the castle in the 16th century. However, the Ottomans rebuilt it in 1592, incorporating the remaining Frankish tower and Venetian additions. This is the structure visitors see today.Over the centuries, the castle has served multiple purposes. The Ottomans used it as a military garrison and prison. When the British arrived in 1878, the castle became a salt depot until 1935, when it was declared an ancient monument. Today, Paphos Castle is a popular tourist attraction that hosts various events and art exhibitions. Visitors can explore the central courtyard, the dark dungeons, and climb to the rooftop battlements for stunning views of the harbor and the Mediterranean Sea. The castle also provides a unique setting for the annual Paphos Aphrodite Festival, featuring opera performances in its open courtyard.
