The Timios Stavros Monastery, or Monastery of the Holy Cross, is a testament to Cypriot history and religious tradition. According to local tradition, the monastery's origins predate the arrival of St. Helena in Cyprus in 327 AD. Legend says that villagers discovered a continuously burning fire amidst bushes and unearthed a cave containing a cross, leading them to build a chapel on the site. This chapel gradually expanded into the grand monastery complex seen today. The monastery has undergone numerous transformations and renovations throughout its history. During Turkish rule, it secured immunity, allowing it to flourish. In 1757, a water system was established. Significant renovations occurred in the 19th century, including the addition of the west wing and a gold-plated iconostasis. The monastery's architecture showcases its history. The complex is built in the shape of the Greek letter Π, with a two-story structure surrounding the central church. The church is a three-aisled basilica, constructed above the cave where the Holy Cross was found. Inside, visitors can admire the gold-plated iconostasis, ancient icons, and intricate wood carvings. The monastery houses important religious artifacts, including a fragment of the Holy Rope, believed to be the rope used to bind Christ to the Cross, a piece of stone from Golgotha, and a wooden cross adorned with precious gems. The monastery hosts the annual Feast of the Holy Cross on September 14th, one of the largest religious fairs in Cyprus. The celebration lasts three days, with vendors gathering in the square to sell their wares. The monastery also has museums showcasing Byzantine icons, folk art, and artifacts from the National Liberation Struggle.
