Discover more about Choirokoitia

Choirokoitia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a fascinating journey back to Neolithic Cyprus. Inhabited from the 7th to the 4th millennium BC, this ancient settlement provides invaluable insights into the daily lives and societal structures of the island's early inhabitants. Located 6 km from the southern coast, in the Larnaca district, the village is situated on the slopes of a hill, partially enclosed by the Maroni River. Discovered in 1934, Choirokoitia showcases the Aceramic Neolithic period at its peak. The well-organized community engaged in agriculture, hunting, and herding. The village consisted of circular houses constructed from mudbrick and stone, featuring flat roofs and protective walls. These walls, up to 2.5 meters thick, suggest a collective effort and a structured social organization. Today, visitors can explore the excavated remains of the settlement and step inside five reconstructed cylindrical dwellings. These reconstructions, built using authentic Neolithic methods and materials, offer a vivid representation of daily life in the village. Replicas of household objects are displayed inside the dwellings, while the surrounding vegetation features native plants and trees that have grown in Cyprus since Neolithic times. Walking through the site, one can admire the remarkable preservation and imagine the lives of those who lived here thousands of years ago.
