    Discover more about Venetian Column

The Venetian Column, prominently situated in Atatürk Square (Sarayönü) in North Nicosia, is a captivating historical monument that encapsulates the diverse history of Cyprus. While often referred to as the 'Venetian Column,' its origins and journey are more complex than the name suggests. The column itself predates the Venetian period, having been sourced from the ancient city of Salamis, specifically from the Temple of Zeus. It was brought to Nicosia in 1489 during the Venetian rule as a tribute to their power and influence in Cyprus.Initially, the column was erected in front of the Lusignan Palace, which served as the residence of the Venetian governors. To symbolize Venetian dominance, the column was topped with the Lion of St. Mark, and the base was adorned with the coats of arms of six noble Venetian families. This placement and symbolism were intended to project the authority and prestige of the Venetian Republic over its Cypriot territory. However, the column's story did not end with the Venetians. In 1570, the Ottoman Empire conquered Cyprus, marking a significant shift in the island's history. The Ottomans removed the Lion of St. Mark and toppled the column, leaving it in the courtyard of the Sarayönü Mosque. This act was symbolic of the change in power and the end of Venetian rule. The column remained in this state for centuries until the British administration of Cyprus re-erected it in 1915, during World War I. The British replaced the lost Lion of St. Mark with a bronze orb and added inscriptions commemorating the column's history, specifically the dates of its demolition (1550) and re-erection (1915). This act can be seen as a statement of British authority and a nod to the island's complex past.Today, the Venetian Column stands as a powerful symbol of Nicosia's resilience and its ability to blend different cultural influences. The column itself is made of grey granite. Surrounding the column is a square steeped in history. Any visitor to the walled city will pass this monument which can make a creative photo for your social media posts.
