Discover more about Archaeological Site of Agios Georgios at Pegeia

The Archaeological Site of Agios Georgios, located in Pegeia, Paphos, is a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and pilgrims alike. Excavations beginning in the 1950s revealed significant remnants of an Early Christian settlement, including three Early Christian Basilicas and a 6th-century bathhouse. Later excavations uncovered an extensive unwalled settlement from the Roman and early Christian periods. The settlement flourished under the rule of Justinian I (527-565 AD), likely serving as a vital port for ships transporting grain from Egypt to Constantinople. Overlooking the sea, the necropolis features rock-carved tombs. At the heart of the settlement stands the grand three-aisled 'Basilica A' with an adjacent baptistery. Nearby, you'll find a smaller three-aisled basilica with a transept. The 'Basilica B' is located at the foot of the southern slope, and the remains of 'Basilica C' are northeast of the settlement. Between the basilicas and the necropolis lies the revered pilgrimage site of Agios Georgios. A small chapel, also dedicated to Agios Georgios and dating back to the late 13th or early 14th century, can also be found in the area. The site is open year-round, offering a unique opportunity to explore Cyprus's heritage.
