Discover more about Neolithic Settlement of Choirokoitia

The Neolithic Settlement of Choirokoitia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, offers a captivating journey into Cyprus's prehistoric past. Located 35km from Larnaca, this remarkably well-preserved settlement dates back to the 7th to 4th millennia BC, providing invaluable insights into the evolution of human society in the Eastern Mediterranean. Discovered in 1934, Choirokoitia showcases the Aceramic Neolithic period at its peak, representing the success of the first farmers who settled in Cyprus from the Near East. The settlement features the remains of circular houses constructed from mudbrick and stone, reflecting a communal building effort with few parallels in the region. These houses consisted of several circular buildings equipped with hearths and basins arranged around a small central courtyard, where domestic activities took place. Visitors can explore the excavated remains of the original settlement and wander through five reconstructed cylindrical dwellings built using the same methods and materials as the originals. These reconstructions offer a vivid representation of Neolithic life, complete with replicas of household objects and native vegetation that has thrived in Cyprus since that era. The site also features remnants of defensive walls, highlighting the structured social organization of this ancient community. Choirokoitia provides a unique opportunity to connect with the ingenuity and resilience of early Cypriot society. It demonstrates how culture spread into the Mediterranean, making it one of the most important prehistoric sites in the region.
