Larnaka Medieval Fort: A Coastal Sentinel Through Time

Larnaka Medieval Fort, a historical edifice also referred to as Larnaka Fort, is situated at the southern end of Larnaca's picturesque Foinikoudes promenade. Its origins are believed to trace back to the Middle Ages, with its current form largely shaped during Ottoman rule, although its exact beginnings are debated. Some historians attribute its construction to Lusignan King James I (1382-1398 AD), who sought to protect the town's harbor.Throughout its history, the fort has served various purposes. After the Ottoman period, the British converted it into a prison, using the western chamber on the ground floor for executions until 1948. Today, the fort houses the Larnaka Medieval Museum, which spans three rooms and displays artifacts from the Early Christian era (4th-7th centuries) to the Ottoman period (18th-19th century). Visitors can explore exhibits featuring Byzantine wall paintings, medieval pottery, Venetian helmets and swords, and Ottoman-era cooking utensils.The fort's location offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, making it a popular spot for photography. The courtyard often hosts cultural events and features a 600-seat open-air theatre.
