Bellapais Abbey – Gothic Splendor in the Hills above Kyrenia

Perched above Kyrenia in northern Cyprus, Bellapais Abbey–literally the “Abbey of Peace”–was founded in the early 13th century by canons fleeing Jerusalem and soon became a grand Gothic monastic complex under the Lusignan kings. The church, cloisters and refectory showcase vaulted stonework, sculpted pulpit and soaring arches that once echoed with the rhythms of medieval monastic life. Centuries of history are written in the scars of Bellapais: after a Genoese raid in 1373 stripped its treasures, the abbey eventually fell into neglect under Ottoman and Orthodox stewardship, though stone walls still resonate with the region’s storied past. A British‑era hospital left bullet holes in the refectory wall, a visceral trace of modern conflict layered onto medieval stone. Now a hauntingly beautiful ruin, Bellapais offers sun‑lit cloisters, ancient Roman sarcophagi repurposed as lavabos, and sweeping views down to the Mediterranean. In summer, the stunning acoustics of its refectory draw classical music concerts, transforming the ruins into a stage for cultural reverie between columns and sunset skies.
