Kyrenia Marina: A Mediterranean Jewel

Explore the historic Kyrenia Marina: a vibrant harbor blending ancient history with Mediterranean charm, waterfront dining, and scenic boat tours.

4.7

Kyrenia Marina, or Girne Marina, is a captivating destination steeped in history and brimming with activity. Dating back to the 10th century BC, the harbor has evolved through Byzantine, Lusignan, and Venetian influences, serving as a vital trading and defense point. Today, it stands as a testament to the island's rich past, with well-preserved architecture and a bustling atmosphere. Dominating the harbor is the imposing Kyrenia Castle, originally built by the Byzantines to protect against Arab raids. Conquered by Richard the Lionheart in 1191, the castle has witnessed centuries of history and now houses the Kyrenia Shipwreck Museum, showcasing relics from ancient maritime history, including a 4th-century BC shipwreck. The horseshoe-shaped harbor is lined with charming cafes, restaurants, and shops, many housed in former carob warehouses and Venetian dwellings. These establishments offer a delightful blend of local cuisine and international flavors, with fresh seafood being a particular highlight. Visitors can stroll along the waterfront, admire the mix of fishing boats and luxury yachts, and soak in the Mediterranean ambiance. Kyrenia Marina is more than just a pretty harbor; it's a hub for various activities. Boat tours depart from the marina, offering excursions to secluded beaches and historical sites along the coast. The marina also provides access to modern amenities, including the Les Ambassadeurs Hotel, beach clubs, and fitness facilities. Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or a taste of history, Kyrenia Marina offers an unforgettable experience.
