Discover more about Thalassa

The Thalassa Museum, whose name comes from the Greek word for 'sea,' is located in the heart of Ayia Napa and stands as the only maritime museum in Cyprus. Since opening in August 2005, the museum has been dedicated to showcasing the profound impact of the sea on the history and culture of Cyprus. The museum's exhibits span from pale ontological times through the prehistoric era until the present day. Visitors can explore Cypriot antiquities covering 7,000 years, from the Neolithic period to the Venetian rule. Among the most important exhibits are a composite vase with a vertical handle of red polished ware from the Early Bronze Age III (2100-1900 B.C.), a clay model of a ship with sailors from the Cypro-Archaic II period (600-480 B.C.), and red-figured plates decorated with fish from the Classical and Hellenistic periods (475-30 B.C.). A highlight of the museum is the life-size replica of the ancient ship of Kyrenia, of the Classical period (400 B.C.). Visitors can walk on an exciting glass floor where a reconstruction of the old shipwreck is displayed, and a documentary film is screened about the excavations of the ancient ship and its preservation. The Marine Life Museum Tornaritis - Pierides presents the marine fauna of the Mediterranean, contributing to the study and research of this geographical area's natural history. The exhibits include shells, corals, sea urchins, lobsters, sponges, and stuffed fish. The museum is a three-story building constructed of marble, onyx, wood, and metal, offering unique experiences that appeal to all senses through its 'bird's eye view'. It is subdivided into six levels, and the exhibits are presented in four different styles: in under-floor free-standing showcases, in modern showcases, exhibits placed around the museum, and others suspended from the roof. The museum also has a multipurpose room, an area specially formed for educational programs, seminars, conferences, and laboratories that cover various areas and are related to history, culture, and tourism. During the summer months, there is an amphitheater for music, dance, and theatrical presentations.
