Discover more about Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Arakas

The Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Arakas, also known as Panagia tou Araka, is a significant religious monument located in the Pitsilia region of Cyprus, near the village of Lagoudera. This UNESCO World Heritage site dates back to the 12th century, representing a remarkable testament to Byzantine art and religious heritage. The monastery's name is believed to have originated either from the pea plant ('arakas' in Greek) that thrives in the area or from 'ierakas,' meaning falcon. According to tradition, a nobleman named Leon Afthentis found an icon of the Virgin Mary while hunting, leading him to build the monastery. The church itself is a one-aisled, domed structure with a cross-shaped roof, typical of Cypriot monastic architecture. A timber roof was added in the 14th century for protection. The true allure of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Arakas lies within its walls. The interior is adorned with exceptionally well-preserved frescoes, commissioned in December 1192 by Leon Afthentis. These frescoes are considered among the finest examples of Comnenian-style art and the most complete series from the Middle Byzantine period found in Cyprus. Art historians note the influence of Constantinople in the frescoes' style and iconographic program. The dome features Christ Pantokrator, surrounded by Old Testament prophets. The apse depicts the Virgin Mary with archangels and hierarchs, while the semi-circular wall showcases Cypriot saints. The painter is believed to be Theodoros Apsevdis. Over the centuries, the monastery experienced periods of decline. By 1735, it was nearly abandoned, with only three monks in residence. Today, only the two-story building on the north side of the church remains. In 1985, the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Arakas, along with nine other painted Byzantine churches in the Troodos Mountains, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
