Discover more about Hatjiroussos Cave

Located at the base of a steep hill in the traditional village of Lofou, Hatjiroussos Cave is more than just a geological formation; it's a window into the past. This perimeter cave, stretching approximately 10 meters deep and 2 meters high, covers an area of about 60-70 square meters. Local lore suggests that the cave was initially used by shepherds as a refuge for their flocks. Later, it became a dwelling for the Hatjiroussos family, who are believed to be among the first to settle in Lofou, possibly during Ottoman rule. The cave's name is derived from this family. The cave appears to have been carved out, indicating human modification. Today, the Hatjiroussos Cave is partially preserved by the Lofou Community Council, recognizing its cultural and historical significance. However, maintenance work has been paused to allow for a scientific investigation by the Geological Survey Department of the Republic of Cyprus. Visiting the cave provides a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and historical depth of Lofou.
