Discover more about Góry Troodos

The Troodos Mountains, the largest mountain range in Cyprus, dominate the western side of the island, offering a refreshing escape from the sun-soaked beaches. Rising to 1,952 meters at Mount Olympus, the range is a haven of cool, pine-scented air, traditional villages, and historic monasteries. Geologically significant, the Troodos Mountains are part of an ophiolite sequence, formed millions of years ago by the collision of the African and European tectonic plates. Erosion has revealed a unique landscape of intact rocks and petrified pillow lava, making it a prime location for geological study. In 2008, UNESCO recognized this significance by designating Troodos as a Geopark. Throughout history, the mountains have been vital to Cyprus. Ancient mines supplied copper to the Mediterranean, and during the Byzantine era, the area became a center for religious art and architecture, with monasteries and churches built away from the vulnerable coastline. Today, ten of these Byzantine monuments are UNESCO World Heritage sites, showcasing the island's rich cultural and religious heritage. Visitors can explore picturesque villages like Kakopetria, Omodos, and Platres, each offering a unique glimpse into Cypriot life. Hike scenic trails, discover cascading waterfalls like Kalidonia, and visit local wineries to sample regional wines. In winter, Mount Olympus transforms into a ski resort, offering a unique Mediterranean skiing experience. The Troodos Mountains offer a diverse range of activities and attractions, making them a year-round destination for nature lovers, history buffs, and adventure seekers.
