Discover more about Lofou

Lofou, a picturesque village located 26 kilometers northwest of Limassol, offers a captivating glimpse into traditional Cypriot life. Situated at an altitude of 780 meters in the 'ampelochoria' region, between Limassol and Paphos, Lofou is known for its circular layout on the hills, surrounded by steep mountains and divided by the Kryos and Kouris rivers. The village's history stretches back to the Bronze Age, with evidence suggesting inhabitation since then. Inhabited since the 4th century BCE by ancient Greeks, the village was an important center for agriculture and trade, especially in wine, olive oil, and grains. During the Frankish and Ottoman periods, Lofou served as a refuge from coastal raids, with the first written records appearing in Frankish Cyprus. The village was gifted around 1392 along with some other villages to the King of Cyprus James I to his brother Janot de Lusignan. Under British rule, Lofou transformed into a massive vineyard, changing the village's image. Today, Lofou's restored houses with wooden balconies, narrow cobblestone streets, and historical monuments attract visitors. Key attractions include the 19th-century Panagia Chrysolofitissa Church, the Folk Art Museum, and the traditional olive mill. The village also offers a nature trail leading to the Elitzi fountain, which provided water to residents until 1842. Lofou hosts festivals such as the Grape Fest in late September, celebrating the harvest with traditional delicacies and folkloric entertainment. Visitors can explore the village's traditional architecture, sample local cuisine at the tavernas, and immerse themselves in the tranquil setting. With its rich history and natural beauty, Lofou provides a serene escape from the bustle of city life, offering a unique and authentic Cypriot experience.
