Discover more about Omodos

Omodos, located in the Limassol district, is one of the most traditional and picturesque villages in Cyprus. Situated 42 km northwest of Limassol, in the Krassohoria wine region, it sits at an altitude of 800 meters in the Troodos Mountains. The village's history dates back to the Byzantine period or early Frankish rule. The village is known for its traditional Cypriot architecture, featuring cobblestone streets, stone houses, and the grand Omodos Square. The Holy Cross Monastery (Timios Stavros), one of the island's oldest and most significant sacred sites, stands prominently in the village. According to legend, it once housed a fragment of the True Cross, making it a centuries-old pilgrimage destination. Inside, visitors can view preserved liturgical artifacts, frescoes, and icons. Omodos is also famous for its wine-making heritage, especially Commandaria, one of the world's oldest wines. Visitors can explore local wineries and a medieval wine press to learn about the history of wine production in the region. The village offers various museums, including a museum dedicated to the National Liberation Struggle, a center for preserving narrow-knit lacing, and an Icon Museum. The village square hosts the annual Holy Cross religious fair on September 14, one of the island's largest. The celebration lasts three days, with vendors selling their wares in front of the monastery.
