Discover more about Timios Stavros Monastery

The Timios Stavros Monastery, or Monastery of the Holy Cross, stands as a beacon of faith and history in the charming village of Omodos, Cyprus. Considered one of the island's oldest and most historic monasteries, its origins trace back to before 327 AD. Legend says that villagers from the now non-existent Koupetra noticed a fire and discovered a cave with a cross, leading to the chapel's construction and eventual expansion into a monastery. The monastery's architecture is a captivating blend of styles. The complex forms a Π shape, enveloping the central church with a two-story structure. A basilica-style church is built over the cave where the Holy Cross was found. Inside, the gold-plated iconostasis, ancient icons, and intricate wood carvings are particularly stunning. The Synodicon hall features a carved ceiling and the Throne of the Holy Cross, which also serves as a crypt. The monastery holds invaluable relics, drawing pilgrims and visitors. The Great Cross, adorned with silver and gold plating, houses a fragment of the Holy Rope, believed to have bound Christ. A stone piece from Golgotha and a gem-decorated wooden cross add to the sacred atmosphere. Beyond its religious importance, the monastery actively participates in Omodos' cultural life. The Feast of the Holy Cross on September 14 is a major event, attracting vendors and visitors to the village square. Museums within the monastery showcase Byzantine icons, folk art, and the island's struggle for independence. Visitors can explore the monastery's courtyard, admire the marble water fountain, and appreciate the detailed wooden ceilings. The entrance to the monastery is free, allowing everyone to experience this cultural and spiritual treasure.
