Troodos Geopark Visitor Centre: A Geological Gateway

Located in the heart of the Troodos Mountains, near the abandoned asbestos mine, the Troodos Geopark Visitor Centre serves as a gateway to understanding the geological significance and natural beauty of Cyprus. The center is housed in the restored elementary school of the former Amiantos asbestos mine, reflecting the area's industrial past and its transformation into a center for environmental education. Opened in 2015, the visitor center is committed to preserving and showcasing the region's geological heritage. The Troodos Mountains are home to one of the most complete ophiolite sequences in the world, offering a rare opportunity to study the Earth's deep structure. Interactive displays guide visitors through the formation of the Troodos Ophiolite, explaining seafloor spreading, volcanism, and tectonic uplift. The center's exhibits delve into the region's mining history, particularly the Amiantos asbestos mine. Historical photographs and artifacts illustrate the mine's operation, its impact on the local community, and the environmental challenges associated with asbestos mining. The exhibits also highlight efforts to rehabilitate the former mine site and restore the surrounding landscape. At the entrance of the building, there is a geological garden that represents the Troodos ophiolite complex. An outdoor classroom is also available for interactive lessons. Visitors can explore exhibits of rocks and minerals, models of geological sites, and a conference room for documentaries about the Troodos mountain range. The center also hosts exhibits of the abandoned Asbestos and Chromite mines, representations of an ancient furnace for copper production, and a gallery of the last century for the exploitation of sulphate deposits.
