Located within the Paphos Archaeological Park, the Villa of Theseus is a testament to the grandeur of Roman Cyprus. Constructed in the second half of the 2nd century AD atop the ruins of earlier Hellenistic and Roman structures, this expansive villa is believed to have been the residence of the Roman proconsul or governor. The villa is named after the remarkable mosaic depicting Theseus's battle with the Minotaur, a centerpiece of the villa's intricate mosaic floors. These mosaics, dating from the 3rd to 5th centuries AD, are considered among the finest in the Eastern Mediterranean, showcasing scenes from Greek mythology. Besides the namesake mosaic, visitors can also admire depictions of Achilles' birth and Poseidon with Amphitrite. Covering a vast area, the Villa of Theseus once comprised over 100 rooms arranged around a central courtyard. These rooms were divided into official and private spaces, offering insights into the administrative and personal life of the Roman elite. Excavations have revealed residential, domestic, working, and ritual areas, providing a comprehensive picture of life in Roman Paphos. While only the southern half of the villa has been fully excavated, the visible remains offer a captivating journey into the past.
