Discover more about Paphos Castle

Located at the western end of Paphos harbor, Paphos Castle has been a silent witness to Cyprus's tumultuous history. Originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbor, it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1222. The Lusignans rebuilt and expanded it in the 13th century, transforming it into a key Crusader castle. Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous modifications, reflecting the changing rulers of Cyprus. The Venetians further fortified it, while the Ottomans, after conquering the island in the 16th century, rebuilt the castle in 1592, as evidenced by an inscription above the entrance. During Ottoman rule, the castle served as both a prison and a military garrison. In 1878, when the British took over the administration of Cyprus, the castle's military significance diminished, and it was used as a salt storage depot until 1935 when it was declared an Ancient Monument. Today, Paphos Castle stands as a popular tourist attraction, offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the city. Visitors can explore its corridors, rooms, and exhibition spaces, and admire the views from the towers. The castle also serves as a venue for events, concerts, and festivals.
