Discover more about Ancient Kourion

Ancient Kourion, located near Episkopi, Cyprus, is an archaeological site that unveils layers of Cypriot history from the Neolithic era to the 7th century AD. Founded in the 13th century BC by settlers from Argos, Greece, Kourion evolved into a prominent city-kingdom, playing a vital role in regional conflicts and trade. The site's centerpiece is the Greco-Roman theater, dating back to the 2nd century BC, which could seat up to 3,500 spectators. It is still used today for open-air musical and theatrical performances, especially during the summer. East of the theater lie the remains of the House of Eustolios, a Roman villa converted into a public recreation center in the early Christian period, featuring intricate 5th-century mosaic floors and a bathing complex. Other notable structures include the Roman Agora, surrounded by marble columns, and the early Christian basilica, dating back to the 5th century, which contains a separate baptistery. The House of Achilles and the House of the Gladiators display well-preserved mosaic floors depicting scenes of gladiatorial combat. Kourion was destroyed by a severe earthquake in the late 4th century AD, rebuilt, and ultimately abandoned after Arab raids in the 7th century. Today, it stands as one of the most frequently visited ancient monuments in Cyprus, offering panoramic views and a tangible connection to the island's diverse past.
