Discover more about Archaeological Site of the Tombs of the Kings

The Tombs of the Kings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, is a large necropolis dating back to the 4th century BC. Despite its name, no kings were buried here; instead, the tombs served as the final resting place for Paphitic aristocrats and high officials. The name derives from the grandeur and splendor of the tombs themselves. Carved out of solid rock, many of the underground tombs mirror the houses of the living, featuring burial chambers that open onto a peristyle atrium. The architecture is unusual for the area, bearing a Macedonian influence. Some are adorned with Doric columns. Inside, visitors can explore the chambers and admire the ancient architecture. Though many frescoes have been lost to time, fragments remain. The inclusion of Rhodian amphorae in the burials has helped archaeologists date the site and its artifacts. Over the centuries, the tombs have been subject to looting and damage. Some chambers were even used as housing or workspaces during the Medieval period. Today, the Tombs of the Kings stand as a testament to Paphos' rich history and cultural significance, offering a glimpse into the lavish afterlife of the island's elite.
