Kakopetria: A Mountain Village Escape

Kakopetria, located 55 kilometers southwest of Nicosia, is a picturesque village in the Troodos Mountains, offering a serene retreat from Cyprus's bustling cities and coastal resorts. Situated at 667 meters above sea level, it is the highest village in the Solea Valley, characterized by its traditional architecture, verdant landscapes, and historical significance. The village is divided into two parts: the old and the new. Palia Kakopetria, the old quarter, showcases narrow, cobblestone streets and restored traditional houses with wooden balconies, providing a glimpse into authentic Cypriot village life. The new part of the village features more modern houses with tiled roofs. Kakopetria's history dates back to the 6th and 7th centuries, with archaeological evidence of settlements and an ancient shrine dedicated to the goddess Athena. The village is also known for the Church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, an 11th-century Byzantine monastery church and a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its well-preserved frescoes. Surrounded by dense forests and the Kargotis and Garillis rivers, which merge to form the Klarios River, Kakopetria is a haven for nature lovers. Visitors can explore scenic trails, restored watermills like the Mylos tis Gonias, and the Linos Museum, which highlights the village's cultural heritage with exhibits on wine production, bread making, and olive oil extraction. The village is also known for its silkworm breeding and silk production, which thrived until after World War II. Kakopetria's name is said to originate from either the rocky terrain or a legend about a newly-wed couple buried under a rolling rock called "Petra tou Androgynou" (Couple's Rock).
