Lofou: A Timeless Cypriot Village

Lofou, a picturesque village in the Limassol district of Cyprus, sits at an altitude of 780 meters, approximately 26 km northwest of Limassol. The village's name originates from the Greek word 'lofos,' meaning 'hill,' reflecting its elevated position. Lofou's history stretches back to ancient times, with archaeological evidence suggesting habitation since the Bronze Age. The village was built during the Arab invasions, when inhabitants were forced to leave the coast for protection. The first written mention of Lofou dates back to the Frankish period. During Ottoman rule, Lofou was part of the 'kaza of Koilani' and primarily inhabited by Greek Cypriots. Under British rule, Lofou transformed into a vast vineyard landscape. Today, Lofou is known for its well-preserved traditional architecture, including cobblestone streets and stone houses. Key attractions include the 19th-century church dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the old Elitji water fountain (1842), and a small agricultural museum.
