Oleastro Olive Park and Mill Museum: A Taste of Cypriot Tradition

Oleastro Olive Park and Mill Museum, nestled just outside the picturesque village of Anogyra, is more than just a museum; it's a celebration of Cypriot culture, history, and tradition. Founded in 2003, the park is the brainchild of Andreas and Lina Ellinas, who envisioned a space where visitors could learn about the olive tree's significance in Cypriot life. As you enter Oleastro, you're greeted by ancient olive trees, some centuries old, bearing silent witness to generations of Cypriots who have cultivated the land. The heart of Oleastro is its ecological olive mill, a state-of-the-art facility combining traditional methods with modern technology. Here, visitors can observe the olive oil extraction process, particularly during the harvesting season from mid-October to February. The mill uses cold pressing with millstones and is certified to ISO standards for food safety, quality, and environmental protection. The museum offers a comprehensive overview of olive cultivation in Cyprus, dating back 60,000 years. Exhibits showcase Cypriot olive tree varieties, traditional olive oil production equipment, and the role of olives in the Mediterranean diet. For a hands-on experience, participate in workshops to learn about olive oil soap making or Cypriot cooking. The park also features a traditional Cypriot garden, a farm with animals, a playground, and a restaurant serving traditional Cypriot cuisine.
