Discover more about Paphos Castle

Paphos Castle stands proudly at the western end of Paphos Harbour, a silent witness to centuries of Cypriot history. Originally constructed as a Byzantine fortress to safeguard the harbor from Arab raids, the castle has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the island's strategic importance in the Mediterranean. In the 13th century, the Lusignans rebuilt and expanded the castle, turning it into a key Crusader stronghold. The Venetians further modified the structure, adding fortifications. However, the castle was dismantled by the Venetians. The Ottomans rebuilt it in 1592, incorporating elements of the previous Frankish tower and Venetian additions. An inscription above the entrance commemorates this restoration. The main structure is a large square tower with a central courtyard. During Ottoman rule, the ground floor served as a central hall with small rooms used as prison cells. The roof features 12 battlements, once equipped with cannons. In 1878, when the British took over the island's administration, the castle was repurposed as a salt store until 1935 when it was declared an Ancient Monument. Today, Paphos Castle is a major tourist attraction, hosting thematic exhibitions and occasional cultural festivals. Visitors can explore its ancient walls, marvel at its architecture, and enjoy panoramic views of the harbor and the Mediterranean Sea.
