Troodos Geopark Visitor Centre: A Geological Journey

The Troodos Geopark Visitor Centre, nestled near Pano Amiantos in the heart of the Troodos Mountains, serves as a gateway to understanding Cyprus' geological significance and natural beauty. Housed in the restored former elementary school of the Amiantos asbestos mine, the center reflects the area's industrial past and its transformation into a hub for environmental education. Opened in 2015, the visitor center showcases the Troodos Ophiolite, a section of ancient oceanic crust and upper mantle uplifted through tectonic processes. Interactive displays and multimedia presentations guide visitors through the formation of the Troodos Ophiolite, explaining seafloor spreading, volcanism, and tectonic uplift. The center also delves into the region's mining history, particularly the Amiantos asbestos mine. Outside, a geological garden displays rock types in stratigraphic order, representing the Troodos ophiolite sequence. An outdoor classroom hosts interactive lessons for students and the public.
