Discover more about Trooditissa Monastery

The Trooditissa Monastery, perched at an altitude of 1,300 meters, presents a tranquil retreat amidst the pine-covered Troodos Mountains. While the exact date of its founding remains debated, local tradition suggests it emerged after the iconoclastic period, possibly around 990 AD. The monastery's establishment is linked to a hermit seeking refuge during the iconoclasm, a period of religious conflict in the Byzantine Empire. Though the original buildings from the Middle Byzantine era (12th century) no longer exist, the current church dates back to 1731. It houses a priceless, silver-leaf covered icon of the Virgin Mary brought from Asia Minor, revered for its supposed miraculous powers, especially for couples desiring children. The church and monastic buildings reflect later architectural styles from the 18th to 20th centuries. Visitors can explore the church, which remains open to the public, and experience the monastery's spiritual ambiance. The monastery holds a large religious fair every year on August 15th, the day of the Dormition of Panagia. The monastery also has a shop where visitors can buy souvenirs, books and traditional products.
