Artemis Trail: A Walk Among the Gods
Hike Cyprus's highest trail, the Artemis Trail, for panoramic views, ancient forests, and a touch of Greek mythology in the Troodos Mountains.
The Artemis Trail, named for the Greek goddess of the hunt and wilderness, encircles the summit of Mount Olympus (Chionistra), the highest peak in Cyprus. At an elevation of 1,850 meters, this 7km trail offers hikers unparalleled panoramic views of the island, from the Troodos Mountains to the distant coastline. The trail winds through a remarkable landscape of black pine forests, home to endemic plant species and unique rock formations. Keep an eye out for the two ancient black pine trees, estimated to be over 500 years old. The well-maintained path is generally considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for families and hikers of varying fitness levels. However, some rocky sections require a bit of care. Historically, the area holds significance as evidenced by the 'Teisia tis Palias Choras' (Walls of Old Chora), the ruins of makeshift fortifications constructed by Venetian generals during the final years of their rule in Cyprus (1571 AD). The trail is located within the Troodos National Forest Park, a Natura 2000 area, ensuring the preservation of its natural beauty. Depending on the season, you might encounter snow-covered paths during winter or enjoy the cool shade of the pine forest in the summer.
